Battery health

Does heat damage iPhone battery health?

Yes. Apple says using an iPhone in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life, and that charging in the heat damages it further. You can’t undo that loss, but you can cut down the heat that causes it.

The short answer

  • Heat speeds up a battery’s chemical aging. Capacity lost to heat doesn’t come back.
  • Apple’s ideal range is 16–22 °C. Ambient heat above 35 °C can permanently damage battery capacity.
  • The habits that matter most are charging somewhere hot, heavy use while charging, and leaving the phone in the sun or a parked car.

What heat does to an iPhone battery

Every lithium-ion battery ages. Apple describes this as chemical age, which depends on several factors, including the battery’s temperature history and charging pattern (Apple). As chemical age increases, two things happen:

  • It holds less charge. Maximum Capacity falls, so a full charge doesn’t last as long.
  • It delivers less peak power. On an aged battery, iOS may limit peak performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns (Apple).

Apple designs iPhone 15 batteries to keep 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles, and iPhone 14 and earlier after 500, under ideal conditions. Heat moves a battery away from those conditions.

How much difference heat makes

Apple’s guidance is clear about the direction, but doesn’t publish numbers for iPhone. Lab data on lithium-ion cells shows the size of the effect. In Battery University’s storage estimates, a cell kept fully charged for a year keeps about 80% of its capacity at 25 °C, but only about 65% at 40 °C. At 40% charge, the same cells keep about 96% and 85%.

These are estimates for cobalt-based cells in storage, not iPhone measurements. The pattern is what matters: heat and a full charge together cause the most wear.

Where the heat usually comes from

  • A parked car or direct sunlight, especially while charging.
  • Gaming, recording video, or navigating while plugged in.
  • Charging on a bed or sofa, or inside certain cases. Apple suggests taking the case off if your iPhone gets hot while charging (Apple).
  • Long camera or GPS sessions outdoors on a hot day.

Five habits that protect battery health

  1. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun. Even storage in a hot place can damage a battery permanently, according to Apple.
  2. Don’t stack heavy use on top of charging. If the phone is already warm, finish the game or recording before you plug in, or unplug while you play.
  3. Take the case off if your iPhone gets hot while charging.
  4. Use Charge Limit or Optimized Battery Charging. On iPhone 15 and later, you can set a limit from 80% to 100% in Settings › Battery › Charging. Less time at 100% means less wear.
  5. Let it cool before charging again after a long, demanding session.

How to check your battery health

Open Settings › Battery › Battery Health (on iPhone 14 and earlier, Battery Health & Charging). Maximum Capacity shows how much charge the battery holds compared with when it was new. iOS also tells you if service is recommended.

The same screen is visible to anyone who buys or trades in your phone. Sabja’s maker saw an exchange offer drop by ₹7,400 when his iPhone 12 mini’s Maximum Capacity had fallen below 85%. That’s one person’s example, not a rule, but it shows why the number is worth protecting.

Sabja reads Apple’s Thermal State and, with Sabja Pro, alerts you when it rises, so you can ease off before heat adds up.

When to get the battery checked

Habits can’t fix a worn or damaged battery. Stop charging and contact Apple or an authorized service provider if the battery swells, the display lifts, the phone is too hot to hold, or it stays hot while you aren’t using it.

Frequently asked questions

Can one hot day ruin an iPhone battery?

A single warm session won’t ruin a battery. Wear builds up with time spent hot, especially when the phone is hot and fully charged at the same time. The goal is to avoid making it a habit.

Can Sabja show my battery health?

No. iOS doesn’t share Maximum Capacity with apps. Check it in Settings › Battery › Battery Health. Sabja shows Thermal State and how long your iPhone spends warm.

Is cold bad for an iPhone battery too?

Apple says very cold conditions can shorten battery life temporarily, and it returns to normal once the phone warms up. Heat is the one that causes permanent loss.
