The short answer
- Warm while charging is normal. Hot is a sign to unplug and let it cool.
- iOS slows or pauses charging when the battery is too warm, and may stop at 80%.
- Charging on a hard surface, out of the sun, with the case off, and without gaming at the same time keeps it cooler.
Why charging makes heat
No charger is perfectly efficient. Some energy turns into heat in the battery and the charging circuits. Fast charging pushes more power in a shorter time, and wireless charging can produce more heat than a cable. Apple lists wireless charging among the normal reasons an iPhone feels warm (Apple).
The heat adds up when charging overlaps with other heat sources: a game, video recording, navigation, a thick case, a soft surface, or a sunny spot.
What iOS does when it gets too warm
- Charging slows or stops. The Lock Screen may say “Charging On Hold” until the device returns to normal temperature.
- Charging may stop at 80%. Apple says software may limit charging above 80% when the battery is warmer than recommended (Apple).
- Optimized Battery Charging can also hold at 80% on purpose, then finish before you usually unplug (Apple).
Seven ways to charge cooler
- Charge on a hard surface, not a bed, sofa, or pillow.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and out of a parked car.
- Take the case off if it gets hot while charging.
- Don’t game, record video, or navigate while charging if the phone is already warm.
- Use Charge Limit (iPhone 15 and later, 80–100%) or Optimized Battery Charging.
- Charge when convenient instead of running it down to empty. Lab data shows partial charges put less stress on lithium-ion cells than full ones (Battery University).
- Use undamaged, compatible cables and chargers.

Unplug and contact Apple or an authorised service provider if the phone is too hot to hold, the battery swells or the display lifts, you notice an unusual smell, or the cable or charger is damaged.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for an iPhone to get warm while charging?
Yes. Charging produces some heat, and Apple lists wireless charging as a normal reason for warmth. If it gets hot rather than warm, unplug it, take off the case, and let it cool.
Why does my iPhone stop charging at 80%?
Either Optimized Battery Charging or Charge Limit is holding it there on purpose, or the battery is warmer than recommended and iOS has paused charging until it cools.
Is wireless charging worse for heat?
It can run warmer than a cable. If your iPhone gets hot on a wireless charger, check the alignment, take off the case, or switch to a cable.
